I apologize for the delay in this weeks news (but I slept like a rock after a whirlwind weekend in Saratoga Springs!) Andrea Costanza is working on a summary of Brighton’s results and will get it to me (and the Brighton-Pittsford News) in the next day or so. The weather was a lot warmer then predicted – a bit too hot for chili but we all survived and had a great weekend. Our waterfront tent set up allowed us to see each exciting race! Way to go Brighton Rowers!

1. Regular Practice Schedule this week with loading the boat trailer to prepare for Syracuse on Friday. Syracuse is a one-day regatta on Saturday, May 19.

Land Parents for this week:

5/14 Thank you Michelle Brown!

5/15 Dick Garth (585) 748-4040

5/16 Matthew Goheen (585) 703-9996

5/17 Rhonda Miga (585) 957-1212

5/18 Mimi Hwang (585) 615-0033

2. We have two regattas left this season. Please find the sign up genius menu request for Syracuse here: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/syracuse3. Pittsford’s list will be ready in the next few days.

3. Parents are responsible for transporting rowers to Syracuse. If you do not have a ride, please make sure to let us know ASAP so we can connect you with another rower. (Parents, please communicate with your rower, they may have already set something up with another rower. They seem to be growing up fast!) Regatta Fees have already been collected with the club dues this season.

Report time and specifics on the regatta location will be posted later this week. You will receive an email and we will also post our updates on our Regatta page on the website (http://brightoncrew.org/crew/?page_id=1605)

(I am sure I will have something I forgot to share but my brain is still a bit groggy. So, have an awesome week and expect more later. Rhonda)

Hello Families, I apologize for the delay in sending out this week’s news. With our busy day in Buffalo, I forgot yesterday was Sunday.

Buffalo was a great regatta day

Practice Schedule and Land Parents

Upcoming Regatta – Sign Up Genius (Saratoga)

BRC FanGear – a fund-raiser opportunity

An updated team roster

1. Thank you Coach Chris and Coach Julianna for helping to make things run smoothly with getting our rowers on the water and off the water.

Thank you to all the parents for all of your food donations and volunteer time to help things run smoothly at the BRC Tent. Thank you Joi for keeping the tables stocked with food and drink. And thank you Greg for manning the grills.

Our Varsity Girls 8 boat placed 5th but were allowed to row because there was only 1/2 a second between their time and the 4th place boat. In the final race, our girls took 4th place.

I don’t have the times/placements for our other boats but I am sure our coaches will be reviewing that info with our rowers and working hard to tweak things at practice this week as we prepare for States next week end.

2. Typical practice schedule this week:

Modified on Monday and Wednesday, usual times

Novice and Varsity, Monday through Thursday, usual times

(NOTE: Thursday Novice/Varsity rowers will pack trailer for States. Friday is a travel day to Saratoga. Departure Time TBD.)

Land Parents for the week. This can be a boring job so bring a good book and maybe your camera to get some great candid pictures of the rowers getting boats on and off the water. The team work is amazing to watch (especially when our kids find it difficult to empty a dishwasher at home or often fight with their siblings on a daily basis.)

Monday, May 7 Edith Lawrence (C) (585)329-6724

Tuesday, May 8 Edith Lawrence (C) (585)329-6724

Wednesday, May 9 Beth Laffey (C) (585)755-?8086

Thursday, May 10 Jeriann McEvoy (C) (585) 313-?9759

3. Saratoga (States) is our next scheduled regatta. We will be leaving on Friday, May 11 for Saratoga, NY (time TBD) and our rowers will race on Saturday, May 12, and Sunday, May 13. Rowers will be traveling in 12 passenger vans this trip. Stay tuned for additional details from Laura Civiletti.

Parents who are not chaperoning or driving our boats/equipment to the regatta are welcome to join us for the weekend and take advantage of our discounted hotel rate (if still available). Please go to our regatta info page for the hotel phone number. (Direct Link: http://brightoncrew.org/crew/?page_id=1607) This is where we will post additional regatta details as we get them. Please check his page throughout the week if you misplace your personal email from Laura.

SIGN UP GENIUS: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/nystate1 As usual, food donations from families helps keep our travel/expense costs down. We have plenty of sweet breads and bagels left over from Buffalo (and safely kept in Rhonda’s basement freezer). But please check the sign-up genius for other items you can provide.

Food donations can be dropped off, at your convenience, to Rhonda Miga at 205 Viennawood Drive anytime this week or at the boathouse during practice on Thursday, May 10. Rhonda will be driving the food vehicle, with Joi, to the regatta. Questions? Please feel free to call. 957-1212.

4. Thank you Stephanie Siegrist for coordinating and getting our FanGear website page set up. We will be importing this page into our website in the next few days. For now, you can go directly to the website page and order anything you want. We will be adding items to the page as we find an interest for them. If you don’t see what you would like to have, please contact Michael Abrams at athleticoutlet@frontiernet.net. His store is located in Southtown Plaza. If you drop by the store, the place is “artistically designed” (let’s say) but Michael is awesome to work with and can order you almost anything you would like to have. We have him looking for rugby shirts at this time and welcome any suggestions to add to our website.

Prices are set with a $2 or $3 upcharge. This upcharge comes back to BRC and will be used for our end of year party or to support other BRC needs. Thank you for your support. Here is the direct link to our page: http://w.mawebcenters.com/athleticoutlet/ecommerce/brighton-crew.html

5. I can’t recall if I sent out our updated roster so I am attaching it to our newsletter this week. If you are reading this at the BRC website, please contact Rhonda for your copy. She will email it to you.

Hello Families and Rowers,

We had a great time in Pittsburgh, PA (in spite of the rain and cold and the 5 hour delay on the bus ride back.)

During the races there were 5 other schools competing. Our rowers took 1st place in all races but one, and a very close 2nd was taken in that race. Congratulations to all our rowers! Great job team! A big thank you to Joi Freeman and Greg Cutt for preparing food at this regatta, as well as, those of you who showed up to lend a hand. A special thank you to those of you who provided food items to keep our rowers fuels.

Unfortunately, our bus broke down in Edinburo, PA (almost 3 1/2 hours away from home!) We were blessed that we were not on the highway. The driver was able to pull the bus into a shopping center just off the highway. This gave rowers the opportunity to explore WalMart and a few other shops. We are grateful to Wendy’s manager and staff for allowing us to stay in their restaurant while we waited for the replacement bus to arrive. A special thank you to Joi Freeman for purchasing a variety of card games, coloring books and crayons. It was very very helpful to pass the time.

Our next regatta is in Buffalo on May 6. The cost of this regatta has been included in your dues this season. Transportation for this regatta will be provided by parents. Volunteers will be needed to help on the day of the regatta, as well as, providing food items to keep our rowers fueled. Look for more details closer to the date of the regatta.

Land Parents this week

Friday, April 27: Stephanie Siegrist (C) (585)329-3308

NOTE: We still need a land parent to sign up for Tues, May 1 and Wednesday, May 2. Please take a look and see if you can help out. http://www.signupgenius.com/go/30E0E4CAFAA238-brcspring2

2. Pittsburgh Regatta Information (for Novice and Varsity Rowers): You should have received regatta details via email from Laura Civiletti earlier today (Sunday, April 15). This information can also be found on our website: http://brightoncrew.org/crew/?page_id=1601 This information letter includes everything from departure time, cost, chaperones, etc. Please let us know if you have questions. Contact info on the link above.

3. Food Donations are needed for the Pittsburgh Regatta. While we would like every parent to attend every regatta, we realize it is harder to attend out of town regattas. However, you can still help out. Food is provided to rowers on rowing day. Brighton Rowing Club purchases a majority of the food and supplies. However, to help off set expenses, we have created a menu of items that volunteers can donate. Please take a look and see if you can help out.

4. Welcome Modified Rowers. Our modified rowers start on the water, Monday, April 16. Rowers please make sure your registration is complete. There is both an electronic registration and paper forms, as well as a swim test, that need to be completed before you will be allowed on the water. Please check in with Carolyn Bower or Rhonda Miga when you arrive to the boathouse.

Team Roster

Modified Rowers Start, Monday, April 16.

You have not been “unsubscribed.”

1. Practice Schedule. Practice starts at 3:45 for Varsity and 4:00 for Novice. Rowers finish up between 5:45pm and 6:00pm. Stop by early and watch the process of teamwork take place before your very eyes.

Yes, we will have practice on Good Friday.

Below are this weeks land parents and their cell phone numbers. Coaches will have their cell phones while on the water but may miss your call due to their attention being somewhere else. So, if you need to reach your rower during practice, your best bet is to contact the land parent.

Monday, April 2: Carol McKenna (585) 727-7235

Tuesday, April 3: Andrea Costanza (585) 764-3850

Wednesday, April 4: Beth Laffey (585) 755-8086

Thursday, April 5: Rhonda Miga (585) 957-1212

Friday, April 6: Dona Joi Freeman (585) 683-9293

Looking ahead: We need Land Parents for April 10,12, and 13. Please take a look and see if any of these days work for you. http://www.signupgenius.com/go/30E0E4CAFAA238-brcspring2

2. Spring Break – Will you be here?

Brighton Rowing Club DOES have practice over spring break. If you will be out of town, please let your coach know now so they can plan accordingly. If the coaches do not hear from you in advance, they will be expecting your rower at practice.

Practice times remain the same. Monday through Friday, Start at 3:45 pm varsity/4:00pm novice. Ending between 5:45 and 6:00 pm.

3. Pittsburgh, April 20. Our first Regatta is just around the corner. Please watch for an email later this week with specific information on our Pittsburgh Regatta. Rowers will miss part of school on Friday, April 20. Please plan for that early departure by letting teachers know now.

We don’t have the information updated on the website yet. As soon as we know all the legistics, you can visit http://brightoncrew.org/crew/?page_id=1601 for the most up-to-date information.

4. Team Roster. Rhonda has the Team Roster up-to-date as much as she can have it. It will be attached to your personal email of the weekly news. However, if you are reading this on the website, please send Rhonda an email to receive your personal copy. (communications@brightoncrew.org)

5. Modified Rowing Season. Welcome to our Modified Rowers this season! If you are a modified rower / family member, you should have received a detailed email from me earlier this week. If not – or if you have questions, please contact me. Monday, April 16 will be here before you know it.

6. Many of you received emails last week stating you were unsubscribed from our list groups. You have not been unsubscribed. Rhonda was updating the list groups and it was just easier to delete all those subscribed and mass subscribe from our new roster list. Thank you for understanding and I apologize for the confusion.

Hello Brighton Rowing Club Families and Coaches,

It’s that time again… we are preparing to get on the water by the end of March and our first regatta is right around the corner.

Please join us for our mandatory Parents’ Meeting on March 7 at 7:00pm in the Brighton High School cafeteria.

At this meeting, we will cover everything that is happening this season, as well as, hold our drawing for a chance to ROW FREE with Brighton this season.

Even if you made a donation in 2011, you may want to make another donation for 2012. A receipt will be provided for your taxes if you would like to claim the donation in 2012.

NEW ROWERS – SWIM TEST

If you are new to Brighton Rowing Club, you will need to take a quick swim test. We will be offering this test starting at 7pm at the Brighton High School pool. So, parents can participate in the meeting and new rowers can take care of their test at the same time. Please bring your swim suit and a sweatshirt you don’t mind getting wet.

REGISTRATION

You may have received an email from Rhonda or Carolyn this week to let you know your registration status. If you are missing any of your registration items, please bring them with you to the meeting. Carolyn Bower will be available to help you complete the process. NOTE: Rowers will not be allowed on the water this year until ALL registration components are completed. So, please check in with Carolyn to make sure you have what you need. It would be very disappointing for your rower to show up to the boat house on the first day of practice and be told they can’t row.

VOLUNTEERS

Brighton Rowing Club is a volunteer organization. Without our volunteers, we could not survive…so thank you for your support.

Stephanie Siegrist, our Volunteers’ Coordinator, has created a volunteer database of our needs. Please take a moment to look it over and decide what gift you have that you can share with us this season. Each family’s contribution to the Club’s work ensures our rowers have a great experience season after season.

Volunteer opportunities range from one time contributions to seasonal jobs. We have something for everyone. Please take a few minutes to find out more.

We need to train replacements for graduating experts:

Travel Agent– Make hotel/bus reservations for away regattas. Determine travel budget.

Rowing Equipment Manager–Inventory, Storage, Maintenance of boats, riggings, launches/motors, ergometers, etc…

Treasurer–Handle BRC income/expenses; present financial reports to the Board; develop operating budget to meet BRC financial goals; plan major purchases

Incoming Directors-at-Large–3 to 5 people “in training”. Learn the workings of the Brighton Rowing Club and our Board of Directors, prepare to step into a defined role: http://brightoncrew.org/crew/?page_id=901.

Stephanie will be available for you to connect with at the Parents’ Meeting, Wednesday, March 7th, 7 PM, BHS Cafeteria.

PS: Volunteers don’t have to be parents. Rowers interested in leadership can serve their Club, too.

We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday.

Any questions? Contact Rhonda Miga at communications@brightoncrew.org
