Hello Brighton Rowing Club… the time to get on the water this season is almost here. Weekly emails will start now to help keep you informed of upcoming events and important information. If you have questions or would like a different email addressed added (or removed) from our listgroup, please send Rhonda Miga an email to registrar@brightoncrew.org

1. Mandatory Parent Meeting, March 19 at 7:00 pm. Location: Jewish Community Center in Brighton. If room number is not posted at the door, please stop by the information desk for meeting location. The meeting will last about an hour. We will be reviewing: this seasons regattas and projected expenses, volunteer opportunities, practice times and expectations, etc.

2. We will be finalizing any outstanding registration items needed for this season. Rowers will NOT be allowed on-the-water until ALL needed registration items are turned in. Please bring any outstanding items needed to the Parent Meeting. If you are not sure that you have turned in all items or if you are missing an item, please stop by the Registration Desk Tuesday evening. (Unless you have registered in the last week, you most likely received an email with a list of needed items.)

3. We will draw winners for our ROW FREE SPRING 2013 raffle at the parent meeting. BRC is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Your donation help BRC with team parties and other team extras throughout the season. A $25 donation = 1 ticket, and a $50 donation = 3 tickets. We have 3 giveaways this season. 1st prize is Season Dues, 2nd prize is a team all-weather jacket and 3rd prize is the BRC duffle bag. (Rowers who have already purchased a jacket and/or duffle bag may purchase other like priced items from our available FanGear.) Last minute donations can be made at the Parent Meeting on Tuesday.

4. TEAM Roster. Attached is a DRAFT of this season’s roster. Please review your information and let Rhonda know if there are any changes that need to be made (added or removed). Please use this roster to connect with other parents to set up car pools to the Genesee Rowing Boathouse.

5. NOTE change in Practice Schedule this week. Monday and Wednesday’s practice will be at the JCC – regular practice time. On Friday, March 22 we will report to the Genesee Rowing Club Boat House at 3:30pm. Practice will be from 3:300 to 5:30 for Novice and Varsity Rowers. (Modified rowers will begin on-the-water April 15.)

6. Volunteer Opportunities. Land Parents – Please see the attached information on Land Parents. We will have a Sign Up Genius form available later this week to sign up and be a Land Parent. **This is very important** If each rower has one parent sign up at least 2x throughout the season, we can have all practice sessions covered.

Brighton Rowing Club is run solely by volunteers. Without volutneers, BRC would not exist. We have a variety of volunteer opportunities. We will review volunteer opportunities at the Parent meeting. For a behind the scenes volunteer opportunity, Rhonda is looking for someone to update the website. If you have a little experience using WordPress please contact Rhonda to help out. We also need a Party Planner to plan the Season Kick Off party and the End of Season Party. If you are able to help with these two events, please let us know. Parents and rowers attend the kick off and end of season party.

Dear Families, Thank you for your patience. Here is the information on Winter Conditioning and Spring Registration. If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.

NOTE: If you will not be rowing with us this Spring and you are still receiving emails, please reply so I can remove your contact information from our database. If you plan to come back in the Fall, you will be added back to our communication database with your completed registration.

1. Winter Conditioning at the JCC
2. Indoor Rowing at the Pittsford Tanks (Invite your friends!) ????
3. Spring Registration (Please complete Regatta Central now – don’t wait!)????
4. New Rowers – Order Your Novice T-shirts????

1. WINTER CONDITIONING????
The coaches have finalized our use of the facilities at the JCC. The cost to non-JCC members is $60. There is no additional cost to those who are already JCC members. If you have not done so already, please print the attached JCC application and return it to Rhonda Miga, 205 Viennawood Drive, Rochester, NY 14618, along with your check for $60. This cost covers membership from 1/18/13 to 4/18/13. (This is a FULL JCC MEMBERSHIP and rowers are encouraged to use the facilities outside of scheduled rowing practices.

Practices will be …
For Varsity, Novice: Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 3:15 pm to 5:45pm (5:30pm on Friday)
For Modified: Monday and Wednesday 3:15 pm to 5:45 pm (Modified are invited to practice on Friday’s

No Practice the week of Winter Break – Feb 18-22

Transportation to the JCC: There is a bus that goes from both the middle school and the high school to the JCC “at dismissal.” However, it is my understanding this bus (from the HS) can be crowded. The bus number from the high school is #21. I do not know the number for the middle school (Modified Rowers, please stop by the office to find out the middle school bus number). Due to the crowding, rowers are encouraged to coordinate rides to the JCC, as well as, make arrangements to get home. The JCC does have a lounge area allowing rowers to work on homework should they need to arrive early or stay late while waiting for practice to start or a ride home.

2. TRY ROWING at Pittsford Indoor Rowing Center:
We also have TWO indoor (optional) rowing opportunities at the Pittsford Indoor Rowing Center. We encourage rowers to invite their friends to these events to “try out” rowing.

Saturday, January 19 TRY ROWING! & BRC Workshop @ Indoor Tanks in Pittsfored 2:00pm – 3:30pm
Saturday, March 9 TRY ROWING & BRC Workshop @ Indoor Tanks, Pittsford. 4 – 5:30pm

The Pittsford Indoor Rowing Center is located just north of Jefferson Rd, on Clover Street, in the Town of Pittsford. It is located on the east side of Clover Street, adjacent to the Erie Canal (beside the Gallea Nursery). Please share these two dates with anyone you think may be interested in rowing with us. A perfect opportunity to introduce your friends to rowing.

3. SPRING REGISTRATION????

NOTE: Rhonda will be at the JCC to collect registrations for Spring 2013 on January 18, January 21. You can bring your registration to the JCC during practice or mail to: Brighton Rowing Club, Registrar, PO Box 18724, Rochester, NY 14618

We know that Spring is a couple of months away but Registration actually starts now, with Winter Conditioning. If you are rowing in the Spring, please please please complete your electronic registration (Regatta Central) so I can have a basic head count. This is helpful in securing transportation for away regattas at a better price saving you money in the end.

For our returning rowers…
1) Complete Registration via Regatta Central http://brightoncrew.org/crew/?page_id=1369 (NOTE: you can choose to pay by check and send that in later but fill out the registration now, please)
2) Complete the attached US Rowing paper waiver AND the electronic copy . (BOTH are needed)
2013 USRowing Electronic Waiver https://rosters.usrowing.org/ (good from 01/01/2013 – 12/31/2013) NOTE: You will need BRC’s Club Number to complete the electronic registration: 37JE4)
3) If you have received a recent physical from your pediatrician, you most likely need to update your Physician’s Approval to Row. These are good for one year from the date of your last physical or the date signed by the physician. Of course, Rhonda will be checking for needed updates on this for you.
4) Pay your dues & local regatta fees $715 ($595 dues, $120 local regatta fees – we have 4 this season).

(Regatta Dates:http://brightoncrew.org/crew/?page_id=2590; Fees for the Season Breakdown: http://brightoncrew.org/crew/?page_id=2121)

And that is about it for returning rowers.

New to BRC Rowers…
Please go to the checklist on our website (http://brightoncrew.org/crew/?page_id=185) for a complete list of what is needed. (you can also email Rhonda (registrar@brightoncrew.org) or call 957-1212, and she will walk you though what is needed.

BRC kids eligible to sign up for GRC indoor tank sessions

This is not required or expected, we are offering it for those who cannot make the normal BRC indoor practice times, or want to build additional technique and endurance.

In addition to the 2 Saturday tank days BRC will be holding in January & March, all BRC kids (Modified, Novice, and Varsity) are welcome to sign up for GRC’s regular indoor tanks program. Session II (Jan 3 – Feb 13) and/or Session III (Feb 14 – March 27).

What are the tanks?
Rowing on the water, but indoors. Check it out at http://www.pittsfordindoorrowingcenter.org/tour.html
Tank training is kind of serious – You do a short erg warmup, then row all 8 the entire time. There is no opportunity to slack off, and the water in the tanks will feel somewhat “heavier” than in a boat. It is great for technique because the coach can stand right next to you, observe you closely, and physically correct your position while you are rowing. Also, the “set” is always perfect. If you want to see what it’s like before signing up, stop by the session going on now to observe.

Times
Tuesday & Thur 5:45pm – 7:15pm. These times probably make no sense for kids participating in BRC indoor training after school, but might be an option for kids who have an after school conflict
Saturday 7am – 8:30am. We realize this is pretty early for teenagers to get up on Saturday, but it’s a great way to start your weekend, especially if you can go out for bagels afterwards with friends

Coaching & Participants
This program is run by Genesee Rowing Club (who operates our boathouse). Coaching is by Will Greene (former BRC Head Coach), and current BRC coaches Chris H, Nicki, and Lisa. If the BRC coaches aren’t coaching, they are usually there rowing themselves. The majority of participants are adults, BRC coaches and parents among them.

Registration & payment is directly through GRC. http://geneseerowingclub.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=125&Itemid=1

To register go to https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dDJkb1RpdmIzOXFfWjgzQUNJdUFjdFE6MQ

Cost for each session is payable directly to Genesee Rowing Club
Once a week (6 times) = $90
Twice a week (12 times) = $175
Three times a week (18 times) = $260
Drop In (experienced rowers ONLY) = $20 per day. In order to ensure enough coaches, GRC would like to know you plan to drop in and which days are most likely.
