BRC Ohio Trip – Article by Timothy Lawrence

Dr. Timothy Lawrence wrote a great article for the Brighton-Pittsford Post. Here it is – enjoy!

Brighton Rowing Club Opens Spring Campaign in Ohio

The Brighton Rowing Club began its seventeenth spring season at the Hoover Invitational in Westerville, Ohio on Saturday April 19th.  The Brighton Crew sent three crews of eights and three crews of fours to compete in the two-kilometer sprint races on the Hoover Reservoir northeast of Columbus.

There were 155 crews from 13 schools and clubs from six states and Canada, including Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, West Virginia, and Michigan as well as Ontario, Canada.

The girls JV eight excelled in recording the sixth fastest time among nine crews at 8:23.04 in the qualifying heats in the morning. In the final in the afternoon they again finished sixth. They were essentially a novice team, rowing among the second-best crews of all the clubs.

The team was led by Helen Siegrist, a BHS freshman and novice rower at stroke, and junior Vidhya Jeyadev as the coxswain, along with BHS juniors Jewell Freeman, and several novice rowers from BHS including Cameron St. Clair, Drew O’Neil, Mikayla Henry, and Julia Mieszczanska, as well as novice rowers Archana Sharma from Webster Schroeder HS, and Liana Meisenzahl from Gates-Chili HS.

The boys’ varsity and JV fours and the girls’ varsity four all fared well against the stout Midwestern competition. The boys’ varsity four finished eighth fastest of the 11 squads in 7:54.25, while the varsity girls’ four was 10th of 13 crews in 8:38.44.

The boys’ JV four hit 8:23.22, good for 11th out of 14 crews entered.

The boys’ and girls’ varsity eights had their hands full with exceedingly tough competition from the big-city crews from Cincinnati, Columbus, Cleveland, Indianapolis, and Detroit. The boys’ varsity eight still smoked over the 2-K course with a 7:02.15, but finished fifth in their heat. The varsity girls’ eight were slamming at 7:40.45 for the 2-K, but also were fifth in their heat.

BHS sophomore stroke Quinn Coughlin led the boys’ varsity four along with classmate Ryan Moorthi, and BHS seniors Ben Costanza and Eli Lawrence and Madeline Heilbroner, a BHS junior as cox. That group was joined by BHS junior Pablo Stein, and BHS sophs Robert Criddle, Jake Egamino, Cameron McKinzie in the boys’ varsity eight.

The girls’ varsity four as led by BHS senior Hannah Rabinowitz at stroke, classmate Claire Siegrist, and BHS junior Laura Castelein as coxswain, along with sophs Elena Bernstein and Hannah Tilson. That crew was joined in the eight by Mercy High School junior Kennedy Abbott in the second seat, and BHS soph Celia Garth as stroke, along with classmates Franie Parker-Hale and Evie Brooks.

Robert Criddle was the stroke for the boys’ JV four, along with novices John Hanrahan, Joe Dasta, and Connor McMurtrie, and Calista Greenberg as the coxswain, who were making their debuts in competition on the water.

BRC New for Modied Rowers

Dear Modified Families,

Due to the current speeds of the river, it is unsafe for our modified rowers to get on the river.  There will not be a practice on Monday, April 14.  We will have a land practice on Wednesday, April 16.  Please know that the skills learned during a land practice will be helpful to your rower We hope that with the increased temperatures that the currents of the water will slow down by Monday, April 21.

We would like to add Friday’s into our practice schedule starting, Friday, April 25.  We apologize if there is a rower who cannot attend Friday practices.  We will hold as many Friday practices as it takes to make up for Mother Nature.

As of today, Wednesday, April 9, the currents are 9,080P  (P = Provisional data subject to revision)
What we are looking for is 6,000P  P or below.  Until the currents reach 6,000P   we will be unable to get on the water.

If you would like to follow the water flow, you may do so by clicking the link on our website. “Genesee River Water Flow – Current-Conditions Data for the Genesee River at Ford Street Bridge, Rochester, NY.”

As long as the currents slow to 6,000P our practice schedule will be as follows:

Wednesday, April 16
Monday, April 21
Wednesday, April 23
Friday, April 25
Monday, April 28
Wednesday, April 30
Friday, May 2
Monday, May 5
Wednesday, May 7
No Practice on Friday, May 9
Monday, May12
Wednesday, May 14
(if needed) Friday, May 16
Monday, May 19
Wednesday, May 21
(if needed) Friday, May 23
Pittsford Regatta, May 24/25 (possible)

We are looking into having a demonstration row at the Pittsford Regatta. Please stay tuned to see if our rowers will be able to row on Saturday or Sunday during this event.

As always, if you have questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact us. If, for some reason, you are unable to make it to a practice, please let Coach Liza Savage-Katz know.
