BRC News 4/26/15: Awesome Teamwork, Practice Monday 4/27, Buffalo Regatta, etc…

  1. Awesome Teamwork!  Congratulations and thank you to all BRC rowers, parents, coaches (and a few alumni!) for a successful Mercer Lake Regatta in NJ last weekend.  It was a new event for BRC, there were some equipment and travel challenges, and competition was intense.  But, everyone had a great experience on a world-class race course at a well-run event in 80 degree sunshine.   First regattas of our spring season were traditionally in Ohio or Pittsburgh and the team had to deal with cold rain…not this time!  Coach Will expects we’ll plan on this regatta again next year.  If you have not yet paid your NJ regatta fees, please mail to Treasurer, Brighton Rowing Club, PO Box 18724, Rochester, NY 14618.
  2. Practice Monday 4/27 will take place per usual schedule for all teams.   Even if school is out, practice is on.
  3. John Bennett Regatta, Buffalo, Sunday, 5/3.  Details available on the Regatta Page.  BRC has 7 entries; race schedule not yet posted (as of this writing.) Coaches will tell rowers what time to arrive, usually by 7:30AM.  Rowers will be either rigging boats or helping set up the BRC tent when they arrive.  Travel time from Rochester is a good 90 minutes by the time you park and walk to the site.  In 2014, this event was cancelled because of ice on Lake Erie. I emailed the host, Westside Rowing Club, and they haven’t seen any ice on the course in a week!   Spectators welcome: visit the SignUp, enjoy the racing and the tour the Frank Lloyd Wright boathouse.  There is no additional fee for this regatta; it’s included in registration for the season.
  4. Hospitality Update:  Joi has officially passed the Hospitality Coordinator torch to Becky Davidson…thank you Becky!  There is some new info about Hospitality jobs on the website.  Questions:  becky.davidson@brightoncrew.org.
  5. Fundraising Workshop:  Thank you, Tracy Schleyer, for your work with the board to organize fundraising opportunities for BRC.  At the top of our wish-list is to replace the launches and motors.  Stay tuned for more information, or contact Tracy (Drew’s Mom) to help with this important task.

BRC News 4/13/15: Critical Regatta Info; Welcome Modified; New FanGear

  1. CRITICALNovice and Varsity rowers MUST inform coaches and Tamara Abbott, Regatta Director by Tuesday, 4/14, 8PM if they will NOT be competing at NYS Championships in Saratoga, 5/8-10.  Regatta travel plans/costs are based on number of participants.  You will receive a separate email with details.  Questions:  tamara.abbott@brightoncrew.org; will.greene@brightoncrew.org.
  2. Practice for Modified begins 4/13, 4-5:30, Mondays and Wednesdays.  Come dressed for the weather.  Wear running shoes in case Coach Liza calls a land practice the first day.
  3. New BRC FanGear available:  Vests, breakaway warm-up pants, umbrellas, new T- and tank designs.  Visit our FanGear site, and order from Athletic Outlet by 9AM, Tuesday, 4/14, to have it ready for NJ regatta.  Usually they require a 2-week turnaround, but will prioritize your order if it’s received in time.
  4. Travel info for Mercer Lake Regatta in NJ this weekend will be emailed separately to Novice and Varsity.  This is a new regatta for BRC and an opportunity for our high school rowers to compete on a world-class sprint course that has hosted Olympic team trials, NCAA finals and other championship events.  Spring racing is different from fall events.  In fall, boats race one at a time against the clock (“Head race” format) over a ~6000 meter course.  In spring, boats race against each other side by side in heats (“Sprint race” format) over a ~1500-2000 meter course.  Top finishers in each heat move on to semi- and finals; boats can race 2-3 times in the same event if they’re competitive enough!
  5. Trailer will be loaded Thursday at practice, which may run late that night.  De-rigging and trailering the gear is a lot of work and all rowers’ help is needed.   Coach Lisa will run a land practice on Friday, 4/17, 3:45-5:45.
  6. Updated Team Roster will be emailed separately once finalized. It will include contact info for key volunteers and board members
  7. Thank you Zelazny’s for hosting our party on Saturday!
