BRC News 2/24/16: Fest of Ideas, Swim Tests, Captains

Somewhere Ice is Melting

  1. Festival of Ideas, Saturday, February 27:  Thanks to Joi Freeman,  BRC will host our first workshop at the Fest this year to introduce 5th-8th graders to rowing, raise awareness of the club and build a pipeline of future members.
    1. Peter Siegrist is in charge, Jewell Freeman (BRC alumna!) will be on hand, but they need 3-4 more BRC rowers to help transport equipment and dazzle the kids.
    2. Let Mr. Siegrist know (314-3539, psiegrist810@gmail.com) that you’re available, 12-3PM this Saturday.
    3. Wear your BRC Fangear, etc…Thank you!
  2. Swim Tests for new members…welcome!  Each new Modified and Novice rower has to pass a swim test, even if you did Summer Learn-to-Row.  Will be held at the BHS pool, dates TBA.
    1. Wear a bathing suit and sweatshirt (bring a towel and dry clothes to change).
    2. Swim 2 lengths and tread water for 10 minutes.
    3. Style doesn’t matter, but you must demonstrate that you can save yourself in the very-unlikely event you end up in the water.
  3. Co-Captains:  Novice and Varsity rowers should submit their nominations to Coach Will by Thursday, 2/25 practice.
    1. Position Purpose/Summary: Be a strong leader by example (one of the hardest workers on the team, displaying a high level of commitment, focus, intensity, passion, and effort) and strong vocal leader with good communication skills (one who will encourage, support, and positively hold all teammates accountable).
    2. Nominate yourself, or the teammate who can handle the responsibilities.  See earlier email for details; let me know if you need more info.
  4. If you haven’t completed your Spring 2016 registration, please do it ASAP:   Click Here NOW.  If you HAVE registered, thank you!
  5. Parent Meeting date TBA…stay tuned!  Mandatory for all Novice and Varsity parents; Modified parents welcome, too.

BRC News 2/15/16: Co-Captains; New Boats; Thanks, Chris!

  1. Do you have what it takes to be a BRC Co-Captain?  BRC Novice and Varsity Rowers will receive a separate e-mail with details about nominating themselves or a teammate for team co-captains.
    1. Please send your nomination to Will by 2/21/16.
    2. Position Purpose/Summary: Be a strong leader by example (one of the hardest workers on the team, displaying a high level of commitment, focus, intensity, passion, and effort) and strong vocal leader with good communication skills (one who will encourage, support, and positively hold all teammates accountable).
  2. New Launch!  New Girls 8+!
    1. Thanks to our 2015 fundraising efforts (corporate challenge, volunteering, contributions), BRC will have a new launch/motor for spring!  $4500 buys less coach-time fiddling with a stalling motor or bailing water, less noise so rowers can hear the coach, and better for the environment.  Thanks for supporting BRC!
    2. Racing boat changes:   Coach Will is always evaluating the equipment we have, to be sure it matches the size of the team and individual rowers on the team.  Specific boat models are designed for rowers of specific levels of experience and average weight.  So:
      1. We have sold the Ceslovas and a Girls 8+ and have used the funds to order a new Vespoli Girls 8+.  It will be delivered in late April, and will be the 1st one off the production line of the latest design.
      2. Our next fundraising goal is to buy a new Boys racing 8+ for Spring 2019:  $40,000.
  3. Thank You Coach Chris Cistrone!  Just wanted you to know, that Coach Chris very generously offered to coach BRC Fall 2015 season without being paid (coaches are BRC’s only paid staff).  Also, Chris coaches for GRC, but donated his pay back to the club to cover summer GRC memberships for a few U of R rowers.  Cool!
  4. If you haven’t completed your Spring 2016 registration, please do it ASAP:   Click Here NOW.  If you HAVE registered, you can pat yourself on the back and know you’re appreciated by the parents who have to keep track of such things.  😉
