BRC News 5/30/16: Summer Plans, Recruiting

  1. Congratulations to all BRC rowers on a strong Spring 2016 season!  Thank you to all parents and coaches for supporting the club’s success.  Keep up your training and stay fit for fall.  Best wishes to our graduating seniors:  Franie, Celia, Vidhya, Cam, Ryan and Quinn!
  2. Final “Practice” on Tuesday, 5/31, 3:45-5:45PM.  Boat washing, straightening up the boathouse, etc… All Novice and Varsity rowers are expected to be there.
  3. Girls Ltwt 4+ is preparing for USRowing Youth National Championship on Mercer Lake, 6/10-12.  Good luck, girls! Go BRC!
  4. Who wants to practice, scrimmage or compete in regattas this summer?  BRC usually takes the summer off, but several rowers have asked about summer opportunities.  Please contact stephanie.siegrist@brightoncrew.org ASAP with your ideas and availability, and we’ll see what we can come up with.
  5. Learn to Row:  tell your friends!  
    1. Open House/National Learn to Row Day:  Saturday, June 4, 2-5PM.   A great opportunity for parents and friends to learn proper technique on the erg from our coaches, then go on-water in an 8+ with experienced rowers.  All BRC parents should try this!!  Click Here to register at GRC’s site.
    2. Summer Learn-to-Row Camps: 4 2-week sessions in August.  See more info below.  Thanks to everyone who helped promote at TCMS!
    3. Experienced rowers needed to help out at these events and fill the boats.  Please email Helen Siegrist at hmsiegrist123@gmail.com if you’re interested.
  6. Building BRC:  more rowers means easier car-pools and lower regatta fees 🙂

Brighton Rowing Club 2016 Summer Learn-to-Row Camps: for boys and girls entering grades 7-12 from throughout the Rochester Metro Area (any town, any school district).

2-week program, Monday-Friday, teaches rowing techniques and quickly progresses to rowing on the Genesee River and Erie Canal. No rowing/boating experience is necessary, but participants must be able to swim.   All equipment is provided.

Rowing is a total-body workout that builds endurance, strength, balance, mental discipline and teamwork.   Excellent cross-training off-season from other sports; very low injury risk.

  • Session 1   August 1-12                         9-11 AM
  • Session 2   August 1-12                        3:45-5:45 PM
  • Session 3   Aug 22-Sept 2                   9-11 AM
  • Session 4   Aug 22-Sept 2                   3:45-5:45 PM

Fee: $195/2-week session.  $25 discount on the Fall season club registration if you keep rowing!   Looking for a new sport?  With BRC, everyone participates.  No bench-sitters, no cuts.  This spring, our boats earned 5 medals at NY State Championships, and are competing in 2 National Championship regattas!

BRC News 5/25/16: Busy Week at BRC; SignUp for Pittsford and Party

  1. Thank you to all rowers, parents and coaches for another great day in Syracuse last weekend!   A special thank-you to Ellie Rosenbloom for taking great photos:  Click Here to view them on Dropbox.  If others have photos, please share them.
  2. TCMS Sports Assembly on Friday, May 27, 8-9AM is BRC’s most successful recruiting event for Summer Learn-to-Row and Fall season.  About 6-8 enthusiastic BHS rowers needed, wearing BRC gear and medals, to chat up the rising 9th-graders.  Please contact stephanie.siegrist@brightoncrew.org so I know who’ll be there.  If you attend a non-Brighton school, please let me know how we can reach the kids in your district/school.
  3. SRAA National Championship Regatta, Friday and Saturday, May 27-28 for Girls Ltwt 4+ and Boys Varsity 2x based on their strong finishes at States.  These rowers and Coach Will will miss Pittsford on Saturday, but will return for Sunday’s competition.
  4. Pittsford Regatta, Saturday and Sunday, May 28-29.  Details available on the Regatta Page with link to race schedule.  BRC has 9 entries.
    1. There is usually a practice row on Friday afternoon, TBA per Coach Becca.
    2. Coaches will tell rowers when to arrive for racing on Saturday and Sunday.
    3. The SignUps are set up for the Pittsford Regatta and End of Season Party.  “International Food Festival” for Sunday lunch provided by parents.  SENIOR PARENTS – this is your last time to sign up!!! The novice parents have been fantastic about volunteering this season- now it’s your turn!  Visit the SignUp and let us know how you will help out.
  5. End-of-Season Party on Sunday evening, 5/29, 5-7PM after the regatta at Celia Garth’s house on Clover St.  Details and link to RSVP on the regatta page.  All Varsity, Novice and Modified rowers and families are welcome to celebrate our season and coaches, present paper-plate awards to teammates and send-off our 6 seniors (who have all been rowing all 4 years of high school!)
  6. Boathouse clean-up date TBA, Monday or Tuesday.  Coaches will let you know.
  7. National Learn-to-Row Day June 4, 1:30-5:30PM.  Mark your calendar; details TBA.  Bring your friends!

BRC News 5/19/16: States Results; Syracuse Regatta; Recruiting

  1. Windy weather weighed on every boat’s races last weekend in Saratoga Springs at NYSSRA Championships.  Congratulations Freshmen Girls 4+ on winning club gold! Boys Lightweight 2x and Varsity 2x, and Girls Lightweight 4+ & 2x, medaled based on strong finishes in time trials.  Click here for race results.  See below re: competing at Nationals!
    Congratulations and thank you to all BRC rowers, parents, coaches.  If you have not yet paid your States regatta fees, please mail to Treasurer, Brighton Rowing Club, PO Box 18724, Rochester, NY 14618.
  2. Syracuse Chargers Regatta, Saturday, May 21.  Details available on the Regatta Page.  BRC has 5 entries; race schedule posted here.  Leave Rochester by 6AM to arrive by 7:30AM.  Rowers will be either rigging boats or helping set up the BRC tent when they arrive.  Travel time from Rochester is a good 90 minutes by the time you park and walk to the site.  Spectators welcome: visit the SignUp and let us know how you will help out. We need fresh bagels and someone who can get the water jugs from the boathouse on Friday and fill them up for Saturday.
    There is no additional fee for this regatta; it’s included in registration for the season.
  3. Future Regattas:
    1. Pittsford Regatta:  Sat/Sun, May 28-29.
      End-of-Season Picnic and Senior Send-off:  on Sunday afternoon at the regatta tent.  Rowers will present paper plate awards and honor the seniors.  Details TBA
    2. SRAA Nationals:  Fri/Sat, May 27-28, for Girls Lightweight 4+ and Boys Varsity 2x?  Still waiting on confirmation and details.  These rowers will return to race at Pittsford on Sunday.
    3. USRowing Youth Nationals:  Fri-Sun, June 10-12 for Girls Lightweight 4+ and Lightweight 2x at Mercer Lake in NJ!  Details TBA

BRC News 5/7/16: NY “States”; New Board Members; Recruiting

  1. NY State Scholastic Rowing Championships in Saratoga Springs, 5/14-15/16.

    2. Novice and Varsity will also receive details via email.
  2. Welcome new Board Members Becky Davidson and AnneMarie Schneider!  The board is a dedicated group of stewards who work to ensure that BRC runs smoothly for it’s current and future members.  We’ll be following up with each parent on ways each can contribute to their child’s club and success.
  3. Recruiting new rowers:  Start thinking about:
    1.
